Their connection is unbearable.
This scene from Pride
& Prejudice (2005) is where Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth dances and gets to
know each other through dialogue, obviously, but also through the music.
Throughout the ball scene, the camera is held from a distance and sometimes
when the couples are in frame, the camera is at a close-up. When Mr. Darcy and
Elizabeth’s dance comes, the camera is only focused on them and their
conversation – their movements – as they dance and so does the music. The music has
one main purpose for the ball which is to dance to; however, the music’s
purpose (for Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth) is to show their affectionate feelings
towards one another as they gaze at each other. As they do that, the room is
completely empty supporting the fact that all they see is each other. They are far from reality as they share a connection that only involve themselves – they
are so in love without knowing it. The music describes what they are
feeling for each other and enhances the body language, the emotion, and the
connection they have and the audience feels.
I just love this scene – I can watch it all day, every day. It is so well choreographed and framed. The director exceeded my expectation.
Here is a clip of the scene:

I love this director, and this movie, and this scene! You're right about the great use of music here. Mimi
