Special Effects: Imagination into Reality from Pre-Production to the Big Screen!

Special effects (fx) can bring whatever the writers and directors can imagine into reality. Only the imagination is the limit! This image is making of the visual special effects (VFX) in the film Deadpool

One of my favorite recent movies that involve visual special effects (VFX) are Deadpool, Captain America: The First Avenger, Jurassic World, Cinderella, Star Trek (2009, 2013, 2016), Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arrow (T.V series) and on and on. Almost all the movies and T.V shows we all enjoy today have some sort of VFX put into it. All the VFX in the movie actually is the hardest and longest parts of making a film. That is why highly anticipated movies that require lots of VFXs (mostly origin or sequel films), like the Star Trek series from 2009 to now, take just about two to three years to make and are two to three years apart. You can blame it on Post Production - where the VFX and editing happens

Before you blame post production, you might want to thank it because all the hard work animators, visual effects artists, editors, and the rest of the crew who put the film altogether makes your wildest dreams a reality. One of the most mind blowing VFX is from Captain America: The First Avenger where, in the beginning, Steve Rogers is small, short, and scrawny looking. Obviously, the actor who plays Steve Rogers, Chris Evans, is the exact opposite. VFX had to cut off his arm, back, waist, and even his neck and head from the left side to represent to transformation of Steve later in that scene

Another example is in Alice in Wonderland. The whole movie is full of VFX and green screens where background and objects come to life in post production. It's kind of funny in a way that actors and actresses have to interact with green objects with dots all over it, puppets, stilts, CGI (computer generated imagery or computer animation) characters, and "green leotarded thespians." This article explains all of this in detail and provides a video explaining the post-production in Alice in Wonderland.

Lastly, Star Trek: Beyond (pictured) is one of the best films that has mastered VFXs that made space a whole new world. This video below goes in depth of how the process works in production and post production in Star Trek (2009). It's so amazing what technology can make today. This is another article that provides more information about Star Trek: Into the Darkness.

  1. Great post! You have some wonderful insights into the use of special effects overall (and yes, it's a rare movie that doesn't have something added in post-production). Your examples and images are very informative. Your blog looks great. Mimi
